Bret Stephens's "Pakistan's Existential Challenge" (Global View, May 12) fails to address a key point regarding Pakistan's identity. Pakistan has faced an existential threat for most of its 61-year history, starting with its first war fought mere months after its independence, its dismemberment as a state in 1971 and, most recently, its one of many balance-of-payment crises. Not only has it survived, but its contribution to the world, and especially the U.S., has been significant.

The irony is that after having survived against this backdrop for so many years, most Pakistanis find the sound of alarm bells in the Western media somewhat amusing. To answer Mr. Stephens's question, "too stubborn to fail" is probably the closest answer to the question of a Pakistani identity.
