63 Years of Independence and the Worst Floods

Bookmark and Share

Pakistan celebrated its 64th anniversary of independence on 14th August. Truthfully speaking, there is nothing much to celebrate, no important landmarks of achievements to be proud of. These days the country is facing floods, the worst ever in its history. Over twenty million people have been affected by these floods. Every tenth Pakistani stands victim of these floods. They say that more is yet to come. Short of these floods, the country has been fighting war on terror since 9/11. Corruption and nepotism continue to be on the increase ever since inception of Pakistan. The poverty is on the increase which is causing more and more people to become corrupt and criminals. Rulers and the rich continue to lay hands on more and more wealth.

The situation is so bad that the response to the appeals for donations has been abysmal, not that the people don't want to help their flood affected brethren but because they don't trust the government and other agencies collecting donations and doubt if these donations would be delivered to the right people in need. Notwithstanding all this, we claim to be independent. Are we?
