AS soon as he was set free by the Lahore High Court, Jamaatud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed decried suicide bombings, at the same time voicing his opposition to the Swat operation. He said he would get in touch with all concerned and envisaged a role for himself in defusing the current confrontation between the state and the militants.

There was a tactician trying to sell himself as a moderate according to the demands of the situation. If anyone well-placed is willing to follow his lead, he could help provide Islamabad with the ‘insider’ it desperately seeks in its war against religious extremism.
