RAWALPINDI: Senior law and Constitution expert Senator SM Zafar on Tuesday said that if the report of Ansar Abbasi about the land scam, published in daily The News, was true, it could become impeachment material against President Asif Ali Zardari.

He was responding to a question at Geo News programme “Aaj Kamran Khan Kay Sath”. He said under the Article 43 of the Constitution, the president of Pakistan could not hold a profitable position.

He said according to the established world principle, the president resigns from other posts at the time of taking charge of the president office. While, he added, the report of Ansar Abbasi, published in daily The News, claimed that President Zardari was the director of a company, and had benefited rightly or wrongly from it.

Answering a question he said, the report of Ansar Abbasi could become impeachment material against President Zardari in future. He said if the report was correct, then it had impeachment aspect.

“If the president, according to the Article 47 of the Constitution, works against the Constitution, as I have mentioned the Article 43 which is also being violated. It also shows that if there are serious charges against the president, then it is impeachment material,” he remarked.

PML-N leader Senator Ishaq Dar while speaking in the same programme said that the nation wanted repeal of the 17th Amendment and after restoration of judiciary, repeal of the 17th Amendment was the main demand of the PML-N.

Senior analyst Hasan Askari said the U-turn on the NRO had badly damaged the PPP. He said the PPP had not taken other coalition parties into confidence over the NRO. He said President Zardari was taking unilateral decisions.
