Bannu – the prelude?

There are at least two battles against the Taliban happening simultaneously, they are separate but at the same time interconnected. Though we lack any form of independent verification of what the military spokespersons tell us, it does seem reasonable to infer from their statements that the battle on the ground is going the way of our armed forces.

It is unlikely that the Taliban are going to be defeated in any conventional sense as they are an unconventional force, and can merge into the background as need demands. They can also dictate the nature of the conflict – with the targeted killings of moderate clerics and the destruction of the logistical base of international aid agencies. Where our armed forces ‘win’, they are implementing a policy of holding the ground they stand on – which at least gives the civil administration a chance to pick up the pieces and for the IDPs to return home.
