The increase in allowances announced by the president in his late night address for soldiers battling militants is welcome. Those on the frontline deserve every reward that can be offered for their brave role in the effort to save our country. The decision to set up a military cantonment in Swat also makes sense. This may help ensure that the Taliban militants do not one day attempt to make a comeback to a territory they had begun to consider their own. The presence of a cantonment will also help promote development in a part of the country that badly needs it.
